Door-2-Math Critical Program

The Door-2-Math Critical program is designed for the student to whom math has not made sense for awhile. Typically the student receives C or below grades in math and has large gaps in the math foundation. Below you'll find this program described in the methodology section, along with a real-life example presented in the case study section, and reference letters from parents whose children went through the program.

Methodology

A student who is quite far behind in math has large gaps in math foundation (multiplication, long divisions, fractions, word problems etc.) and typically he has few study and test taking skills because all of the effort has been spent in memorizing and avoiding an F in math.

The critical program usually lasts 6 months to a year. We start with a complete rebuilding of a student's math foundation from the grade at which math stopped making sense. This can take from 1 to 4 months. This is a must since mathematic concepts are stacked upon each other. Only when the foundation has been sufficiently rebuilt can we proceed to addressing the study skills and test taking skills. In this program, the grades do not normally go up during the foundation rebuilding stage, but do start to improve in the study habit and test taking skill building stage.

At the end of the program, the student is up to grade level in math foundation, and has acquired necessary skills to take in new material as it is presented by the teacher.

Case Study

In the beginning:
Carl (not his real name) was a 6th grader at the end of his rope when he started in April. He was consistently getting 40s on his tests and his math foundation was at the second grade level, that is he did not have a good grasp of division and fractions, much less the pre-algebra concepts that he was learning in the sixth grade at his competitive parochial school. Because of his frustration and despair, establishing effective learning habits was not something Carl had ever ‘thought about it’.

During the assessment:
I informed the parents (an army Dad and a stay-at-home mom) right away Carl's grades would not go up quickly and explained why. Assuredness is one of the cornerstones Door-2-Math is build on.  For each family that come in, I am committed to integrity -- even if it means I lose a client.  Luckily for Carl, his parents were very supportive and enthusiastically asked to enroll Carl in Door-2-Math’s Critical program.

The four of us then sat down and together designed a custom program for Carl to: 1) shore up the foundation; 2) build learning skills and finally 3) sharpen the test-taking skills. In the original design and subsequent execution of Carl’s Mathability program, I used my experience working with other students to find the right methodology in reaching him, explaining math Carl’s way, motivating and empowering him.

Result:
By mid-summer through methodical work we caught up Carl on his foundation through division, fractions and finally 7th grade pre-algebra. Next, we moved on to the learning skills. Carl's inefficient approach to learning the material had to be completely reprogrammed so that he was able to grasp and build on concepts in a systematic manner. With the foundation and the learning skills in place we moved on to the test-taking skills. Initially Carl was full of fear when taking tests, and his test scores showed. To improve test-taking skills, Carl learned how to first catch then totally avoid careless mistakes and to calm his frayed nerves. We had also managed to have his math teacher to give Carl more time for his exams. As a result, at the end of his mathability program, Carl received a 92% on his math test, which was the first time that he ever got an A on a math test and was one of the highest grades in his class.

“Now, I feel good about math and myself,” he says.

Few Selected Reference Letters

November, 2009

My family was in crisis and we did not know how to get out of it. Our youngest son had a major math deficit, the best score he could achieve was D. Although we provided him with several private tutoring, his math grade did not improve. He did not like math nor understand math and resisted any help at home or with tutors. Math was his enemy. Our son was then a junior in high school with a solid F. His senior year was quickly approaching. Nothing is working and we were in crisis.

When we started to investigate how to get him to college with such low grade in math, some of our friends told us about Dr. Pan and Door 2 Math. Several of our friends’ sons and daughters had similar problems and Dr. Pan was of great help to them. We were skeptical that any one could help our son after all types of math help he got since middle school. Could Dr. Pan be a superwoman? Probably not, but we had to try.

We met with Dr. Pan and after the assessment interview she told us that our son although very intelligent, was stuck at sixth grade level math. He needs to overcome this problem first before he can move forward, she advised us. For the first time someone had a diagnosis for my son’s math problems, and a plane to fix it. Moreover she was sure he can be good at math.

Our son was unhappy and resistant to the idea of working with Dr. Pan. After talking to her and to our surprise, he agreed to try her plan.

It was a rough start at the beginning, but over time miracles started to happing. Our son showed up with his first A in math and has not looked back since. His attitude towards math has completely changed. He is now helping his friends at school with math and his grades in other subjects have begun to dramatically improve.

Dr. Pan has not only taught him math, but more importantly, she taught him how to study and overcome obstacles on his own. She relentlessly followed up with his teacher at school, his assignments and homework. At the end it all paid off. His progress has been unbelievable. You simply cannot put a Dollar value on this type of progress. It is priceless. Thank you Dr. Pan.

To Motivated Students:

From fifth grade, and on, I have always been terrible at math.  Each year became harder and harder for me.  My lack of skills just kept on piling on each other all through middle school and high school. My senior year, I decided to take PreCalculus / Trigonometry which soon turned into a bad idea within the first month.  By this time, I was so used to getting D's and F's on all of my assignments and tests but I could tell this year it going to harder form me to barely pull an D in that class like I had done these past years.

My mother had discovered Dr. Pan through a coincidence and made me go to one of her assessments.  I botched everything on the assessments from 8th grade math and on.  From my assessment, Feenix saw potential. She saw that I was desperate to changed my outlook on math and not limit he college degrees I could potentially receive of math. I'm not going to lie; I was so skeptical about Dr. Pan. I had two tutors before her and they didnt help me.  I didn't think Feenix could possibly do anything different for me.

For two month Feenix and I studied hard to bring up my grades.  She gave me homework to do along with regular math homework, she threatened to fire me, and she pushed me as hard as she could.  It was all worth it.  I received my first B on a test within two weeks.  We brought my grades up from a 48% to a 61% in tow months.  Not only did my grades go up but also did my confidence.  Fellow students in my class would ask me for help with their homework.

Dr. Pan doesn't just take anyone in.  She picks the kids who have potential. There is no need to feel skeptical of what she can do because if she is willing to help you, it means she can.  She was worth every single penny we spent. I feel like I have hope with math.  This semester I'm taking Trigonometry.  I plan on getting at least a B. I feel like it's possible now.

To Whom It May Concern:

If you are reading this letter it is because you are sitting in Dr. Pan’s classroom and trying to decide if her program is right for your child.  I remember sitting and reading letters and wondering if any child there had the same problem that my child has.  Our daughter struggled to understand math from the beginning.  I remember watching her in third grade and seeing the waves of panic as they swept over her. She did not understand that multiplication was a fast way of addition, and explaining it to her only seemed to compound the problem. Her fear grew until she stopped trying.  It took a toll on her self-esteem. It took a toll on our relationship because I did not know how to reach her.

It was when she was a freshman in high school that she asked for help again.  When that door opened, I took her to see Dr. Pan.  She had immediate relationship with Dr. Pan, she trusted her to teach her. The going has not been easy.  We have a very rebellious teenager who speaks of her own mind.  Dr. Pan does not push her, she gently moves in the direction they need to go and our daughter follows because she is interested in doing the work in a way that had been lost over the years.  We are at the bump in the road; I can see that it was not a learning disability, but a teaching disability, that has hampered our daughter all those years.  We still have time to go, but the confidence is building and I believe that the future is bright!

Best of all, the relationship between my daughter and myself is no longer strained.  I can enjoy her presence without wondering if she has done her homework.  That discussion is between Dr. Pan and her student. What a relief!

Feel free to call me if you feel you need to know more about the program, Dr. Pan has my phone number.

To Whom It May Concern:

Total frustration, declining math test scores, loss of desire to do any math, hating the thought of even looking al math, completely lost in a sea of variables, numbers and equations; homework time with parents trying to help, ending in disappointment for both parties involved. Dr. Feenix Pan was able to extinguish these frustrations and ignite math success in our son, Casey.

As parents, my husband and I were both at a crossroads with our son, trying to figure out what we could do next, to help Casey survive Algebra in the 9th grade. Casey was failing at this point. We hired a friend earlier in the year who tutored Casey, but it only helped with the homework portion and when Casey was on his own for tests, the material he studied was lost in a black hole. After school tutoring was ineffective. I remember sitting one day in my office trying to figure out where to turn for more help. I went and retrieved the mail; there was Dr. Pan’s advertisement for her program, Door-2-Math. I immediately phoned her and after visiting with her for awhile, explaining our dilemma, my husband and I made an appointment to meet with her and have an assessment done with Casey. I was a little nervous, considering I only knew this lady from a flyer in the mail. All of my inhibitions left after our first meeting with Feenix. We are not people to make rash decisions, but Dr Pan and her program impressed us strongly. I felt hope and knew we were making the right choice for Casey. This is where the journey begins.

Casey had math holes that he carried with him from elementary days. I was beside myself that he had done fin through 8thi grade, with above average grades, with such major building blocks missing in his math structure. Casey had actually just been getting by. The first 2 months of Casey’s program was spent filling in these holes that prevented him from grasping Algebra concepts. Dr. Pan was patient, supportive, encouraging and firm when needed. She taught Casey in a manner that he understood and retained what he was taught. This was the key with Casey, he was being taught concepts in a way that he could retrieve the information and place a lid on the black hole. Casey was also taught how to effectively take tests, which helped him succeed. Dr. Pan kept us as parents, well informed about Casey’s progress. Not only was Dr. Pan concerned about Casey’s math, but also his well-being as a teenager. She cares about the child, not just the math. She is a mentor as well as an educator. Casey corresponded with Dr. Pan through emails, phone and faxes. Never did Feenix let questions go unanswered or unresolved. Casey has fostered a friendship and respect for Dr. Pan in this journey that he will carry with him even after his session is done.

Casey grades have gone from “D’s” for the first couple of weeks to “C’s” at mid-term and at last an “A” on one of his latest tests. It has been a team effort, but Casey has been very willing to give a 110% because Dr. Pan hi issued him instruments allowing him to understand math. His journey now continues on his own, but he is prepared and realizes his potential.  Without reservation, I would highly recommend anyone to Dr. Pan when it comes to helping your child find success in math. Why not invest in an asset that guarantees a long-term dividend?

Dear Parent of a Prospective Door-2-Math Student:

It gives me great pleasure, as an educator and as a mother, to recommend to you the services of Dr. Feenix Pan. I my capacity of Dean of the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Pima Community College, I was already acquainted with Dr. Pan’s skills as a very popular and successful math instructor. This is why I did not hesitate to respond to her promotional postcard, when my own daughter began experiencing difficulties in grade four math. The words “Is math eating away your child’s confidence?” rang very true.

My husband and I are both scientists and have the technical skills to tutor mathematics to our children and to provide them with homework help. Nevertheless, our daughter struggled with arithmetic and problem solving since the first grade. We tried the Sylvan system but, while it helped her through the third grade, it did not produce long-lasting effects. Our daughter seemed incapable of retaining what she had been taught. By grade four, evenings in our household were marred by frustration over math homework. This frustration manifested itself in various forms from pained expressions to shouting matches... and our daughter invariably ended up in tears.

The Door-2-Math methodology is not a tutoring system. It may begin with identification of your child’s problem areas and may at first, on the surface, resemble tutoring, but it rapidly evolves into something much deeper. Dr. Pan patiently explored our daughter’s underlying fears with math, her relationships with friends, siblings, teachers and with my husband and myself. Through the sessions with Dr. Pan, I got to know our ten-year-old daughter on an entirely new level -- a deeper and more mature level. I gained new insight into her thought processes, her feelings and genuinely grew closer to her as we worked together to improve her math skills. I feel that I have not only improved my ability to assist my child with math but have become a better parent: I have learned to become more responsive her needs. I have learned how to help her learn.

The lessons that I have learned alongside our daughter have been invaluable. I am certain that they will last a lifetime.

Sincerely,

Ann C., Ph.D.

To Whom It May Concern:

Dr. Feenix Pan has been coaching my son Danny for 5 months. Danny is a freshman at the Sahuaro High School and had graduated from Booth-Ficket Magnet Middle School in May of 2004. He had been struggling with math off and on since 6t grade and we had previously tried to get help from the Sylvan Learning Center.

In the initial assessment, Dr. Pan evaluated and reviewed Danny’s math foundation and his learning style. She then systematically patched up the weaknesses in Danny’s math foundation and creatively taught math “Danny’s Way”. She was flexible in meeting Danny at our home and arranged to meet his math teacher at his school on numerous occasions. In addition, to keep Danny motivated, Dr. Pan taught Danny math at inspirational locations such as Gates Pass and at the Finger Rock.

Danny’s math grades have been climbing steadily for the past two months, and recently he achieved a remarkable 70% on his exam, up from a low of 31% previously. But more importantly, Danny is much more confident in his own ability to learn math. He has acquired tools to figure math problems on his own and frequently raises his hands to ask questions during classes. What he learned about how to learn can be readily applied to other school subjects as well.

Dr. Pan is very personable. She took the time to get to know Danny and was genuinely interested in him as an individual. I would highly recommend Dr. Pan’s superb services to others who are in need of mathematic confidence and acquiring tools on how to learn.

Sincerely,

Meg S., CRS
