"I can see that it was not a learning disability, but a teaching disability, that has hampered our daughter all those years. We still have time to go, but the confidence is building and I believe that the future is bright!"
Judy M., Mother of a 9th grader
Out of all the subjects in school, math is the one subject that robs a child's confidence and stops students from achieving dreams. It doesn't have to be that way.
I know, because I was one of those students who lost confidence and thought that I couldn't do math. But I battled back and went on to earn 2 masters degrees and a PhD degree in optical sciences and electrical engineering.
Out of all the options open to me after graduation, I chose to dedicate my career to helping students who struggle in math. I did this because of my struggles with math and my passion for helping students succeed in math when they have been left behind by the education system.
Using my experience as a student who struggled in math, as a mother of 2 school age children, as an award winning teacher in graduate school, and as a last resort for families that have tried everything else, I use a gentle, integrative and child-centered process to go back to the place where math stopped making sense and rebuild math from the ground up and restore a child's self-confidence. Upon completing programs that are individually designed, Door-2-Math graduates consistently:
Improve Overall Confidence - This is the number one goal. Math struggle takes confidence away, and math success gives it back.
Acquire a Solid Math Foundation - Math subjects build on each other. If a math topic from 2 years back didn't stick, every subsequent math topic is on shaky footing. I start with a birds-eye view of the K-12 math curriculum and make sure that there are no gaps in the math foundation.
Develop Efficient Study Habits - Without solid study habits any math gains are temporary. This is where tutoring fails and students end up relying on a tutor like a crutch. I know what works and what is a waste of time.
Learn Critical Thinking Skills - There are only a few types of problems in math. My students learn how to recognize the different types of problems and apply these skills to effortlessly solve problems that they haven't seen before.
Establish Effective Test Taking Techniques - It breaks my heart when a student who knows her stuff comes back with a poor grade on a test. Few realize that test taking is a wholly separate skill needed for math success. I give my students a whole arsenal of test taking techniques that have been proven to work time and again.
Achieve higher math grades - Only when the foundation, study habits, critical thinking skills, and test taking techniques are in place do the grades go up and stay up.
A Door-2-Math program is a not a light undertaking. A considerable investment is required in time and finances, and in commitment from both the parents and the student. Because of this, I only take on less than 20 students per year and often there is a waiting list.
For families that I do work with, I meet with each student between 1 and 3 times per week (sometimes up to 5 times) and stay in constant contact with the parents. I also give students custom worksheets and assignments separate from the ones in school that they fax back to me. In addition, with the parents' consent I establish contact with the child's math teacher. (There is a good chance that I've already worked with your child's math teacher or had a student that has had the same teacher. )
It is an intense program (4-12 months) and it is up to the parents and the students decide whether it is worth it for them. Families who do work with me consistently say that this is one of the best things that they were able to do for their children, and often siblings end up signing up for a program also.
This website is designed to educate the parent on what's possible no matter how far the child is behind in math. Only two things are required for success: the commitment of the parent and the commitment of the child.
